Dry Shampoo For Days You're Too Busy To Wash Your Hair

We all know in our heart of hearts that it's wise not to lather up every day.  Especially when there are several reasons for not doing so that make so much sense.

By that I mean not washing your hair daily is easier on your strands, easier on your color and easier on you as you have more time to sleep in perhaps.  And let's not fool ourselves that third one may be the key.  Kidding.  Yet who wants to walk into the office or class in the morning sporting an oil slick where your freshly washed hair should be because you overslept?  This is where dry shampoo comes in.

Okay so maybe you've already heard good things about dry shampoo on those no wash days.  Yet "dry" and "shampoo" may not exactly be words you'd use in the same sentence comfortably, now are they?

But guess what?  Advances have made this old product quite new, modern and convenient.  Anymore there are plenty of options that are free of any trace of nasty leftover white powdery residue - which was the drawback of older instant spray shampoos.  Which just has to make this the perfect solution for those days you choose not to suds up yet want to get rid of some flatness or to just add a bit of lift to your second day hair.

But say you've been on the lookout for an amazing dry shampoo but frankly finding the perfect one that works with your mane hasn't been easy.  What should you look for?

Ideally you want one that will sop up any excess oil, clean up sweat and eliminate odor.  Adding a bit of volume at the root level would not be too much to ask now either, would it?

Then here's all you do.  Typically with these sprays you want to keep the can 10 to 12 inches away from your head and aim for your roots.  Let it sit for a few to give it time to work.  Then brush it through.

How To Use Dry Shampoo

Cleansing aside, this styling product is also great for creating added volume or if you need a quick style fix when running from work to something that evening be it class, a date, or some other social get together.  Just don't expect this to leave your hair feeling as clean as if you had actually washed it.

Yet given the convenience, I'll bet you'll love this on-the-go beauty product as much as I do.  You can skip a day and your hair will still look awesome.   Plus you'll feel better since you know the less often you wash your hair the healthier it will probably be as you are not stripping away the natural oils from your mane. This is all the more important if your roots get greasy and your ends tend to be dry.

Dry shampoo is a fantastic way to add volume and restore the sex appeal of second day hair that might be just a little bit greasy.  This is a life-saving beauty secret for busy women on the go too.  All it takes is the time to spray, tousle and brush and you can freshen you hair even when you don't have the time to wash and style it.

Body Building for Fine Hair

Every time one of your favorite magazines hits your mail box, you can bet someone with fabulous hair that's full of body will be splashed across the cover.  Sure they may have perfect looking locks.  Or at least perfect looking enough to make you green with envy.  But do you have the time or money to have your mane looked after by a professional stylist every morning?  Kinda doubtful.

Lucky for you there are things those looking to boost the body of their hair can do.  That work even if you have to work for a living and don't have time for lots of styling time in the morning.  Even better they don't cost a fortune and  may even work as advertised.

Body challenged fine hair especially can often benefit from some body building techniques. Because it is by nature the weaker strand. Smallest of the three types of hair it often lacks the body you crave.  And if you can't build the body you at least want to avoid self-inflicted damage.

AVOID Damage: You can't have full hair if you're always losing it.  Besides damaged hair just doesn't glisten in the sun as you'd like.  This is why you want to take care to be gentle with your hair.  Even the little things count when looking to do that.  Such as using a wide toothed comb. Seamless would even be better.  And remember never to use a comb on wet hair.  Such acts have been red flagged by your stylist as bad for your locks.

BUILD Body:  What kind of shampoo do you use? Is it mild? Is it formulated to do a variety of wonderful things for your hair?  You know clean it, add moisture, somehow plump up your strands through some kind of chemical wizardry all without bogging them down? Such volumizing wonders formulated special for hairstyles for fine hair do exist you know. The primary selling point of such mane cleansing products is how effortlessly they add body to hair.  Just be warned that it just may take you time to find the best one for your hair.

AVOID Damage: Are you taking a minimalist approach when it comes to hot styling tools? Knowing that any kind of heat will be hard on your hair type to begin with. And if you over do it your just increasing the odds of split ends, flyaways and frizz.  And does that even sound remotely close to fabulous fuller hair loaded with body?

BUILD Body: Well at least the illusion of body.  Do that by having your stylist add in volume pumping layers.  It's a less is more approach to building in more body.  Works especially well for finer hair.  Keeping in mind that fine hair looks best when it's kept to chin to shoulder grazing long.

TIP:  Remember that to get bouncy hair that's full of life the trick is to volumize the roots.  That's where the volume action is, so to speak.  So the idea is to focus your product of choice close to the scalp and then let it do its thing. Leaving you with plenty of hair to flick around when the mood strikes.

AVOID Damage: Wearing excessively tight braids or your hair back into a pony tail in the same spot can be hard on your strands.  This can result in excessive breakage.  And even the partial loss of strandage like this makes it hard to keep up the illusion of thicker, fuller hair.

BUILD Body: This time through chemistry.  Using a thickening shampoo and conditioner is a way to cheat and effortlessly add volume.  Stand the roots up (and thus build in the volume) by using a hair powder.  Or get yourself a thickening serum that you apply at bedtime.  The best actually swell the hair shafts themselves which plumps up each so that when you wake up they actually look thicker.

TIP: Okay so it's styling aids to the rescue here.  Just remember that product build up can weigh your struggling fine strands down which kind of defeats the purpose behind those products.  So to reverse that, make use of your favorite build up removing shampoo to undo what you've done to your 'do.  Finish by applying a lightweight conditioner to the tips.

AVOID Damage:  We both know shimmering hair is healthy hair.  Protecting it from the damaging effects of sunlight is vitally important since excessive exposure to UV rays can cause dull lifeless locks.  Which look anything but full and shimmering.

Okay so infusing fine hair with body can be a bit of a chore admittedly.  Yet even simple things like these can help to make your tresses lighter and full of life with extra body to burn. Yes, Virginia, there are truly body builders for fine locks. Just make sure you are not sabotaging their effect by doing things that can damage your precious tresses while trying to build them up.

For Those Looking for Other Ways to Style Fine Hair

Okay so you're looking for more options when it comes to how to style your finer mane.  I get that.  Who isn't?  But before we get into some specifics first some general advice about how to go about it.

For most of us, hairstyles for thinnish, fine hair will often be those that are shorter, chin length or absolutely no longer than shoulder length. The reason for this length limit is simple.  It's best to keep things on the shorter side because shorter hair gives the illusion that things are thicker and fuller with your crowning glory than they really are. Plus letting your fine locks grow much beyond your shoulders will too often make your hair look weak and limp and at times lifeless.

Aside from this, to a certain extent short hairstyles for fine hair will take the focus away from your hair and divert it to your face.  This is good again if your locks are on the thinner side.

You can further emphasize your face by adding bangs to slightly cover your forehead and draw the focus to your eyes.

Or you can also go with a bit of a flip or add in a few curls for a sexy, playful look.

While pinning or tucking your hair behind the ears is another smart if easily overlooked thickening move.  Because doing so is another way to provide you a thicker, fuller look since this keeps your hair together.  Just makes sense, right?  Since this will make it appear like there is more of it.

Okay so getting down to specifics, hair styles like updos and braids are also great hairstyles for those with fine tresses because they will literally hide the fact that the hair is on the thin side. These conceal things very well and gives you a stunning and sophisticated look at the same time.

In fact French braiding gives added volume to the parts of your hair where it seems to be the thinnest. Applying this style to fine tresses can be done in such a way that focuses on the parts of your head where you need the volume most or just to balance out how your hair looks overall

Then for those who want to alter their long length hair style going with a bouffant style is the answer. Not only does it change your look but it creates extra volume while staying in place all day long. Usually.

Tip: Two words. Bobby pins.  Hair accessories like bobby pins can be lifesavers for those with fine hair. Often they will subtly do the trick for you when you need them most. Aside from giving you added volume, they can help you creates a sophisticated look that you need for those special occasions that come up from time to time.  With a way to keep it looking sophisticated and in place.

Finally girls with finer hair find they can make good use of the pony tail.  It can be a casual way to go on the weekends.  Yet can also be a somewhat elegant look that is both fresh and flattering.  Not only that this is a truly hassle free hairstyle.  Note that using a pony tail can also leave some parts of you're a bit hair wavy afterwards however. That is usually not a problem if you plan on washing it soon thereafter.  And certainly not a reason to not embrace this style.

Outside the Box Bob Hair Care Ideas

You will never have a bad hair day again if you opt for one of the modern bob haircuts. Having great hair is not only about looking good but is also about a sense of seductive style, a sense of bewitching attractiveness plus an increased sense of self confidence. That when it all comes together can give you a striking, eye catching cut that leaves you feeling like hot stuff.

Besides enchanting bob cuts are so versatile and the length can vary all over the board and still be considered in the bob neighborhood.  You could have them at a length at ear level or a graceful cut that lets the tips of your hair flow down so they graze your shoulders.

Regardless of the length and style of your bob, your hair would still really appreciate some extra love and care from you.

The first trick is to moisturize your hair.  The more moisture it gets the better.  Going so far as to massage your scalp even if you don't wash your hair to give your locks that bounce, shine and vitality.  Or in other words a healthy yet chic appearance.

Want to add more volume?  Use a volumizing shampoo for a fuller look.  Extra tip: Use this type of shampoo with a light conditioner so it won't come off looking too heavy.

Got thin hair?  Well, steer clear of greasy pomades.  While those with thicker tresses, well, you might want to avoid dry mud and wax pomades.

If you think a perm and a bob don't mix well that's where you're wrong.  In fact, combining both can give you a look that will surely blow the guys away.  A chic bob can easily handle a couple of nice waves and curls.  Or you can take it all the way to curly bob which is another fun change of pace.  Yet you're not stuck with the curls all the time as you can just straighten them anytime if you want to vary your style.

Color?  Did you know that coloring your hair can be just as fun as getting a new haircut?  So if you feel like you're getting kinda tired with your bob cut at present, you can always change the color for a whole new you.   Go as bold as you dare but don't go all crazy.   The trick for keeping things natural looking is to only go at most two shades lighter or darker. Anything beyond that could be disastrous.  As the clash of color with your skin tones can make you look washed out which if we're keeping it real, isn't exactly the look you are going for, now is it?

Yes the cut counts.  It can affect the success of failure of the bob look on you.  Yet regardless of what kind of bob you and your stylists settle on, your hair would still require all the attention and tender loving care it you can give it to insure it looks perky and healthy.  So don't ignore this.  Because it's you who's going to reap the benefits anyway - shiny, stylish, and flirty hair.

So if you're used to a laid back kind of hairstyle, why not add a little sizzle to your look and get a bit bolder?  Have that bob layered or razor cut and get yourself an over the top look.  Great cure for the boredom we all feel with our hairstyles from time to time.  Great way to change your look as the seasons change too.

Poll Any Fashionistas About Hair and Here's What You'll Find

It's a fact.  Some fashionistas just seem to like to endlessly debate the merits of this or that, don't they?  Like hairstyles.  Here the popular debate would be around length.  And despite all the winds of change blowing from Hollywood, long hairstyles maintain their popularity through thick or thin.  But that doesn't stop some from insisting a cute shorter cut would be preferred.  Which doesn't stop others from sticking by their guns and claiming nothing but longer locks will do.

Yet if you bothered to poll stylists and those in the know in the fashion industry, they'd knowingly tell you the reason for the enduring popularity of the longer look.  That would be the same reason for all the change.  Hollywood.  And as long as actresses and celebs and the mover and shakers in the fashion world come on the stage and red carpet with long tresses styled one way or the other the look will endure.

Not to mention the starlets and like just look great with cascading tresses.  Face framing long luscious locks just set off their faces in a way no other cut can.  The long look is part and parcel of the overall glitz and glam package being sold by Hollywood, isn't it?

And guess what else?  When you constantly see a look you want to be seen in the look.  It's only natural.  And we certainly see long often.  All the time even.  Which only encourages us to wear our hair the same way.

But there's more to it than that.  When you've got more hair you've got more ways to wear it.  That's right, there are more ways to present it either classical or trendy playful.  Gone are the days when long hair has to be plain and boring.  The mere act of cutting in some layers effortlessly adds body and fullness that fine hair particularly often lacks.  Layering is an effective yet simple technique that will allow your hair stylist to create shape and texture and add in additional volume for that sexy, bouncy look we all love to flaunt.

Yet look at what else you get.  If you don't want stick straight for whatever reason, no problem.  Dig out the curling or flat iron, some hair protectant and add curls with sexy sizzle.  Try doing that with a pixie haircut

Which is another reason for the popularity of this style.  Versatility.  Again, you don't have to be stuck with just one hairstyle until you grow so very bored with it.  Longer strands give you the opportunity to curl it, wear it straight down or up in an elegant updo.  All giving you a sexy, classic and sophisticated 'do any time and every time.  What's not to like?

This is why it's said if you poll members of the beauty industry you may find that long styles are perpetually "in". Because they are striking yet versatile. With nearly endless possibilities that let you change your hair with the weather.  But only if you wish.

Hair Brush Crush?

Can the right hair brush really leave your hair smooth and soft after your blow dry?  Maybe even leaving you with hair that looks better than what your beautician can produce?  Boy that would be something now wouldn't it?

Can the right brush really hold but yet not pull your hair?  Making for easy breezy styling that leaves you feeling good about your hair.

Can the right hair brush leave you gushing, Love, love, just love this brush!  No, I didn't think so.  But it's possible thought, right?  All because the brush is designed not to tangle but instead glides through your hair while adding a level of fullness and shine like no other one can.

I know.  Hair brushes. For most an afterthought or impulse purchase, right?  Not something you would think you can't live without.  Not something you would think would matter but as it turns out it does.  Especially since there is often a brush designed for the specific job, specific hair type, specific outcome.

Yes, that''s both a blessing and a curse.  You see our brush choices expand every year.  And with more choices, so does our confusion.  Expand that is.  Leaving us bewildered when it comes to the best brush for our hair, style and choice of styling tools.

Tip: If you want silky smooth styling, dry your hair in sections taking care to point the nozzle of your dryer of choice towards the end of the shaft not your scalp.

Then too, the right tool for the job can slash your styling time down to size.  Not only will it work better and faster, it can help your hair look better.  Can you say smoother?  Other it might give your locks a shine assist.  Plus is it too much to ask for something that leaves your mane healthy looking and vibrant.

Besides the last thing you need is a brush that will hopelessly snag your hair.  Then it's no longer how to make your hair look good, it's more how to keep from ripping a handful of hair out while disengaging the ensnarled brush.  Which is certainly not the desired effect for all your trouble.  For real.

Plus when it comes to brushes that work as you know size counts.  So you want to pick a round brush that's the right size for the outcome you are looking for.  A smaller barrel for tighter curls.  Bigger for lush, voluminous ones.

Tip:  Okay I know you know this but it's worth repeating - and don't you dare doze off on me. Most stylists will recommend natural bristles.  Why?  Overall you will find they tend to be finer and offer greater flexibility.  They also tend to be more gloss-giving.  Yes, you're right. They can also cost far more than a hairbrush ought to. But if you can't spring for the real thing, boar, then look for a composite bristle that's combines real and nylon.  Not quite as good but still much better than plastic.

Finally one more thing.  Keep in mind that a little know-how goes a long way.  But it's the tools you use that can make the difference.  And using the right brush can spare you the agony of bad hair days.  You might not believe it but it's true. Yes finding the perfect brush for your strands can be challenging.  But it can be worth the trouble. Who would  guess a hairbrush could make such a difference!

Six Smart Styling Tips to Bring Out the Best in Your Hair

Those who want to catch the eye of a certain someone would be wise to start pampering their mane the way it should be pampered if they are counting on using shiny hair as the boy-bait.  (Man bait or guy bait works too.) Sure you may have read that too much styling can damage your locks.  Which is true.  That can happen.  But damage is not foreordained if you style your hair the right way.

Besides there are plenty of other things that can produce damaged, lifeless if not downright ugly hair too.

The Many Causes of Damaged Ugly Hair
Damaged hair could be due to certain illnesses like say you're suffering from diabetes, lupus, or thyroid disease.  Yeast and fungal infections may also contribute to follicle failure.  While lice infestation could badly impact the health of your scalp. Not to mention how gross those creepy crawlies are.

Another factor that could bring about damaged hair are certain medications.  The list of possible culprits found in your medicine cabinet would include birth control pills, antidepressants, blood thinners, chemo drugs, as well as cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Even worse supposedly good for you things like vitamins can do more harm than good.  For example did you know too much Vitamin A could  lead to serious hair loss?

And let's get real.  Those fast food meals grabbed on the run may catch up to your tresses eventually too.  Not to mention what a crash diet can do to your locks. Or what you could say are another reason why denying your body nutrients like that isn't such a good idea.  In essence if you don't take care diet wise, you'll likely end up facing an endless string of bad hair days - for the rest of your life.

What else?  What about stress?  That's another easily overlooked cause that can lead you down the path to damaged hair.  Not to mention the havoc genetics and hormonal changes can wreck.  Which could also explain why your hair could be thinning out.

External factors can also cause problems such as too much sun exposure. Chemicals like sufates and the like in some shampoos could also leave your tresses strickened.

Other poor hair care practices to avoid include constantly wearing tight braids and excessive brushing. So much for that 100 strokes stuff.

Okay, but the title there promised six styling tips.  So after taking a quick look at things that can damage your hair aside from what happens when styling let's look at what can go wrong when you do.  Plus some other reminders thrown in for good measure.

Six Styling Tips for Awesome Hair

Below are six hair care and styling tips that you'll want to keep handy.

Tip#1: Always, always, always apply heat protection spray or serum to your hair before you even think of picking up that curling or flat iron.  And you're right.  This may not guarantee your hair will never get damaged. But at the least it could reduce the potential for damage.  Especially for heavy users of hot styling tools.

Tip#2: Avoid blow drying.  Yeah, if you can possibly avoid using the blow dryer, please do. If you can't go cold turkey be sure that you at least position the dryer 6-12 inches away from your scalp.  Also be sure to try to direct the air down the hair shaft to smooth out the hair cuticles.  So they are flat to best reflect the light.

And one last thing about your blow drying - never direct the dryer on a certain section of hair for too long.  The idea is to constantly move the dryer from part of your head to another. Once you're done, give your hair a good once over using the coldest setting to seal the hair cuticle.  This will result in shinier locks.

Tip#3: Get frequent trims.  This is a good way to stay on top of those annoying splits and breaks at the hair tips.  Oh, yeah, and don't forget to apply leave-in conditioner on the ends too.

Tip#4: Brush your hair only when it's dry.  If it's is anywhere near wet you need to use a wide-toothed comb to keep the strands from pulling and snapping.

Tip#5:  Go for layers to flatter your face.  Don't do it yourself though.  A visit at the salon would not hurt at all.  Bangs could give oomph to your look as well.

Tip#6:  Prevent hair frizz by running an antifrizz serum or spritz through your hair.  And every time you're done styling, keep your hands off your hair to avoid frizzes too.

Your hair is what most people would likely notice first.  You want them to notice it because it's shiny, healthy and stylish.  Accomplishing that should be easier for you now that you've read these tips.  And perhaps better understand all the things that can affect your look.

Quick Hair Care Guide For the Finely Tressed

Okay I admit it.  Calling this a any sort of guide may be stretching the point. Let's just say that here are a few pointers. Useful tips. Helpful ideas. In other words assistance those with fine locks might appreciate. Plus a nifty video.

Because we both know that a good hair day for fine haired girls is more often than not, more a result of successfully pulling off a smoke and mirrors routine than having locks that really and truly look great on their own.

And to pull off this sleight of hand requires a bevy of specially formulated hair care products and/or styling tools that allow you to effectively deal with that baby fine hair mother nature gave you. Because regardless which of the hairstyles for fine hair you are partial to, well, the style sometimes matters not if you can't get the volume you need.

Problem is, puny, thin strands aside, you have to pump up the volume and produce thickness, sometimes seemingly out of thin hair, errr, air. Yes, flat hair can be thickened with mousse and other volumizers.  But you may have to be willing to live with some really bad hair days (read limp, flat locks) to figure out which of the products promising results can actually do so with your hair.

Hey, but at least this gives you hope, no?

Because you'd like gladly deliver up last year's hot wardrobe hanging in your closet if but for a day you could revel in thick luxuriant hair like Salma Hayek's for example.   Just saying and knowing how disappointed as you are with that wimpy, somewhat wispy hair approximation you were issued at birth.  Because some days no matter what you do, if your hair isn't up to it, all the styling tools in the world aren't going to produce the results you seek.

This is, however, where that impressive array of styling products you've bought over time comes into play.

The list of likely suspects would lead off with mousse which you are undoubtedly familiar with, just so it's a light weight formulation, volumizing spray and the ever popular root lifters.  Any or all of which can do wonders when it comes to conveying the pseudo-look of luxurious volume.

Not to mention what a decent body enhancing, volumizing shampoo can do for you.  Provided you keep the conditioner as far from your scalp as humanly possible.

Now I know you want a list of which work best.

Sorry.

No can do.

What works best for my hair, may not work at all on yours. Or maybe you can't stand the smell.  Or maybe you have sworn to only use salon products while what works for me came directly from Walgreens.

Still just so you can’t say I’m not trying to help, here's a list of top volumizing products found online that you can browse at your leisure to see what you think.

All in all you may be pleasantly surprised, no shocked might be more like it, by the results the properly applied product can produce.  Many are.

Then two more quick tips.

Ever tried blow drying your hair upside down?  Some find it to be a quick way to add more volume to your roots where you need it most.

And here's a surprising one you may not have considered. Getting your hair colored will often result in it looking like it has more body.  Reason?  The coloring process roughs up the cuticles just a bit, accidentally creating lush volume.

Finally I'll bet you can grab a few additional styling tips from this video.

  • Start with damp, towel dried hair that you have run a comb through yet.
  •  Take a few seconds to scrunch it a bit.
  • Then grab whatever heat protectant you prefer and be sure you target your ends with this protection.
  • Smoothing anything that's left over on your fingers through the rest of your hair.
  • Then mess your hair up once more.
  • Next comes the volumizing mousse which you'll apply to the roots.
  • With your blow dryer set on warm dry away then comb your hair out.

The Hair Court of Popular Opinion Rules on Deep Conditioners

All rise.  Hair court is now in session.  The honorable Judge Judy Sephora presiding.

Here are the charges.  How do you plead?

Are you a long time hair abuser?

Answer: Probably more guilty than not.

Do you have a well-known heat addiction and couldn't give up your beloved hot styling tools even if someone offered you winning lottery numbers?

Answer: Well, a little guilty sometimes.

Have you ever or do you now have perm damaged or over-bleached hair that's so bad like a polar bear you'd be nearly invisible in a snow storm?

Answer: Okay but only maybe a time or two a long time ago.

Painful isn't it? Revisiting past episodes of hair abuse like this.  So how well would you do if you had a date in hair court?

And don't lie. Because the verdict is easy to come to.  There's a good reason for that hay hair of yours.  And rather than Desperately Seeking Susan, you're desperately seeking something to take that mop of yours from fried to gorgeous.  Does that about sum things up?

This is why some in their hour of need turn to deep conditioners.  But sometimes you have to wonder.  You read the product description on Amazon and it sounds more like a freakin' miracle in a bottle, doesn't it?  So what is it?  Hype or solid promise?  Again sometimes you have to wonder.

Especially when you are easily preyed on, desperate for a solution as you are.  Well, no, it's more like you ARE looking for miracle in a bottle.  Yeah, this is exactly what you are hoping for.

Well truth is those with healthy hair probably want to deep condition at least once every two weeks.  While those who haven't seen healthy hair since Bill Clinton was president want to do so more often.  Using an intense deep conditioner.  One that is loaded with proteins, panthenol and pro-vitamin B5 even.

Still if you are a color junkie, hot tool addict or have hair that is otherwise seriously chemically dependent, you may find the right product can indeed revive those lifeless locks of yours.  Leaving you once again with silky, shiny, sleek, and bouncy hair.  Or at least something that tames it enough to leave you free to venture forth in public without embarrassment.  Free from the hope you had someone else's hair is on your head.

Naturally some claim they don't have the time to invest in a regular deep conditioning routine.  In that case, why not apply the product to your locks immediately upon entering the shower?  Lather up the rest of you while the conditioner is absorbed into your strands aided by the warming steam of your shower.  That could work, no?

But the truly serious will apply their favorite deep conditioning product to their damp mane.  They'll wrap their hair in a towel, slip on a shower cap, or wrap things up with plastic wrap.  Sitting under a hair dryer only helps that much more.  Or you might sit out in the sun. After 20 minutes (or as long as you can) comes the unveiling.  And prepare to be dazzled by the difference.  Softer, shinier, healthier looking hair.

Honestly, some of this stuff is so good if you're not careful your fav brand may end up being the first hair care product you like on Facebook.  Yeah, the difference can be that dramatic.  But for sure good enough to free you from throwing yourself on the mercy of the hair court.  Because who wants to do that?

Six Reasons to Embrace Flirty Bangs

Girly bangs are both trendy and can almost magically reshape your face.  They work wonders for hiding a high forehead or bringing a sense of balance to things.  So is it any wonder they are so popular?  But in case this is news to you, here are six reasons why you should embrace bangs with open arms.

Low to Maintain.  No need to set the alarm earlier than you have to so you can attend to them.  A bit of brushing and that's it.  Just make sure you keep them trimmed every few weeks, something you can learn to do yourself, and you're ready to face the world.

Eye Appeal.   Turns out bangs bring out the best in your eyes.  So if you're going for sexy and smoldering, bangs can help with that. Yeah they can.

Check bones, anyone?  They also bring extra definition to your face placing an emphasis on your cheek bones.  Plus you get the added benefit of a more angular shaped face, even if yours is not.

Flexible look.  Bangs people soon come to find out you can easily pin them off your face when you feel like it for a somewhat different look.

Fuller look.  Another bit of hair style alchemy bangs help you to effortlessly pull off is a sense of fullness.  As in a fuller head of hair.

Trimmed and Ready.  It bears repeating that they will need to be kept nicely trimmed which can be annoying.  Yet some stylist will do that for you gratis.  Or you and a friend can do each other's.  Just takes a few snips and everything's back to neat and tidy.

In any case, anyone looking for a subtle change that can deliver a dramatically different look should seriously consider bangs. No color change needed.  No agony over lopping off inches of carefully and lovingly tended hair.  No nothing.  Clip a bit off the front and guess what?  A whole new you emerges from the mist.  Ready to grace the cover of any fashion magazine.  The bangs train is leaving the station.  What's keeping you from jumping on?

Mirror Mirror On The Wall and All That Jazz

Who doesn't fondly remember the "Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest..." phrase uttered in Snow White?  If nothing else it brings back memories of a simpler time before worries about split ends, dry hair, and faded color took over our lives.  A time when we might even believe a mirror could talk and answer a question like that.

But what if it was true?  What if your bathroom mirror could offer you personalized beauty advice?  What would your mirror tell you about your mane and how you are caring for it?  The results might surprise you.  Let's quickly explore a few questions inquiring minds might put to your very own magic mirror and see what it might reveal.

Mirror Mirror On the Wall - What's the best shampoo of them all?

Without naming names your mirror might share with you that the best bottle for the job is one that leaves your locks feeling fabulously clean and looking smooth and sleek.  Yes, any more your suds can do more than just get your hair clean.  This is also why some find it best to use the same brand of shampoo and conditioner in tandem, since they are often designed to complement each other.  And if your mane goal is dazzling shine look for silicones or any words ending with - icone on the label.  Silicones also work to give you hair that is smoother and frizz free.

Oh and while the price of your fav grime fighter matters, it may not matter as much as you think.  Drug store brands count of selling massive quantities to keep prices down.  This spreads the cost of their never ending research over more units to keep the price low.  Salon brands focus on gentle cleansing with high concentrations of the good stuff inside - meaning you'll need less to do the job.  Either way a great shampoo is one that works for your hair.  With the amount of product used usually making the cost per shampoo about the same - if you bother to follow the directions on the label.

Mirror Mirror On the Wall - How can I be frizz free forever and all?

Who wouldn't want that?  A wise mirror would look at your hair type before answering.  And then answer carefully. But in general you want to start sleek by using the right shampoo and conditioner.  Then you want to dry right using your hair dryer of choice in a way that works with your hair type.  Finally, and only if need be, hot iron out the frizz limiting the width of the section of hair treated to no more than two inches.  That's because we both know running too much hair through the iron at once leads to uneven heating which can leave open the door to frizziness later.  And for heaven's sakes, don't forget the heat protectant!

Mirror Mirror On the Wall - How can I add body and volume to these finest locks of them all?

Don't look now, but your mirror weeps inside when it sees your limp, lifeless, fine tresses. It's aching to tell you to use a volumizing mousse or spray.  Suggesting you get one of each that is heat activated so you are pumping up the volume while blow drying.  And sure, you want to use a generous amount.  Just don't get carried away.  Yes, mousse is incredibly forgiving and it hard to go overboard with it.  Still the idea is bouncy, flexible volume not a sticky, brittle, stiff mess that looks like it would break off if touched.

Mirror Mirror On the Wall - How can I have mega body, boundless bounce and endless movement and all?

Your all seeing mirror knows you are referring to the cut with this question, rather than using product to achieve those outcomes.  Which is a good thing too.  Because there's a secret your beauty mirror knows that you apparently do not.  It comes down to one word.  Layers.  This is an understated way to instill the beautifying movement you seek.  Layers can frame your face in a flattering way.  They can eliminate extra weight that may be weighing your hair down.  Done right, layers can create the illusion of volume where none exists.  They can give your look a whole new vib and vitality.  What more could you want?

In the end, does the mirror know best?  Could be.  As these are some proven ways to refresh your look and give a sexier edge to a tired style.  So fear not the mirror.  Embrace it's advice.  And you too can have hair that reflects a 10 when held up to the critical, all knowing eye of mirror.

How About a Dramatic Change to a Pixie Haircut?

If you were planning to change your look and do so rather dramatically but are getting cold feet maybe you should ask, "What would Halle Berry do?"

Well, a quick glance through the photo archives would reveal that she's gone pixie short before, looked stunning, and took everyone's breath away.  If that's the affect you want to achieve then by all means go for it.

Or maybe you should ask "What would Rihanna do?"  While I don't feel she's a relationship role model she too does look so cute in a pixie.  So she might be another hair style role model to turn to.

Then too, Winona Ryder has been known to turn heads with this face framing cut too, if awhile back.

These celebs used the ultra short pixie cut to accentuate the fine features of their faces.  Which shows how you can do the same.

Guess you could trace the popularity of this cropped style back to when Twiggy exploded on the scene back in the '60s.  The now classic super short 'do she wore went perfectly with the sense of style she conveyed.  Who can forget those eyes which were so prominent peering out from under those short side swept blonde locks in those iconic images.

This look has come and gone uncountable times ever since.  With many models and stars gracing the covers of People, Vogue, and Cosmo with that stylish and easy on the day to day upkeep cut.

Still you shouldn't assume this is a style for every face shape.  And you shouldn't use your enthusiasm for the look as an excuse for your brain to blink out here either.  That can lead to bad decisions and waiting for your hair to grow out.  In fact a little Q&A with your stylist might be a real good idea.

So if you are unsure if this is the look for you, here are some questions to help you make the right choice.

Asking will a pixie cut work for any type of hair is good.   More importantly asking will it work with YOUR type of hair is better still.

Along the same lines ask, "Can I easily carry it off if I have very fine hair?"

Would any shape of face go well with a pixie cut? This would be good to find out.  But again more to the point, "Will it help flatter the features of my face?" would be better to know.

You'll want to find out how short do you have to go with a pixie cut?  Some want to know how short is short with this type of style?

"Are there certain styling techniques I will need to follow or products to use when working with a pixie hair cut?" is certainly a good question to ask.  While considered low maintenance, you still might want to style it a bit at times.

Make no mistake, deciding on a new hairstyle isn't something easily done.  No matter who you ask.  Or what you ask.  Nor should a short cut like this be done in haste.  Especially if you're going very short because your hair will be short or shorter for some time.  Still if you asked What would Halle do?" she might advise you go for a cut you can wear with flare.  So if you think you can pull that off, then go for it.

Color Ideas If You Asked the Experts

Are you desperately seeking sexy, sultry color ideas to spice up your drab looking locks?

Sure coloring your hair sounds good and all.  Fun even.  But you're not quite sure you're ready to proceed, what with being the near total color virgin that you are?  It's okay if it's true.  There's no shame in admitting that.  But you've kept your secret long enough.

Besides we all have to start somewhere and once you do (start coloring) it's doubtful you'll give up the habit. As today more women than ever are coloring their hair in some form or fashion.

So it would seem to be good you've got the itch too.  Yet like many color virgins, I'll bet the thought of coloring your hair has crossed your mind plenty of times before. But you're chicken.  Or at least have been.  You've agonized over the decision, afraid to take the plunge not knowing what awaits on the other side of the bottle.

That's cool.  It's sometimes takes longer for it to dawn on some that change can be good.  Even if you're going to go from a mousy brown to bombshell blonde.  C'mon.  Live a little.

But the title of this post promised color ideas from the lips of the experts.  Not wanting to cheat you let's get to them.

First, were you to ask a colorist about your plans, wondering if you might be able to do this at home, you'd likely hear a resounding NO!  Which might not be bad advice.  Sure I know home coloring kits have come a long way in recent years.  But this is a complicated change, going blonde that is.  For one you have to remove pigment which is always risky. And certainly not something I'd recommend for a first timer.

First timers are wise to take it slow.  Selecting ammonia free, non permanent products that are close to your natural color are a good way to do just that.  So called demi permanent dyes use just enough peroxide to help the color to take.  Being non permanent means you can expect it to last 25-30 shampoos as the color fades back to your natural shade.  This is a good way to ease into the whole hair coloring thing without making a big commitment.  Plus you avoid all that root touch up stuff too.

Also anyone contemplating a less radical change of color might do well to visit their local beauty supply store.  Sally beauty supply comes to mind as a good place to start.  Places like that give you a better shot at getting the help you may need as opposed to the local Dollar Store, Walmart, or big box drug chain outlet.  There you'd be on your own completely more or less. With no one who can reliably answer your questions.

Did you know some colors retain their vibrancy longer than others?  The ones that have "fade resistant" on the label at least suggest they can.  Just a little tip.

Extending the color can be helped along immensely if you use products formulated for color treated hair.  These may have ingredients that block UV rays.  They may contain gentle cleansing agents.  Some may deposit a bit of color with each usage to offset any fade.

In any case, coloring your hair for the first time can be a bit of an emotional experience.  To make sure you remember it fondly, be sure to do enough research so you know what you're doing, think ahead, and don't be in a rush.  Above all else, follow the directions on the box exactly and for as long as instructed.

Know What You're Putting On Your Hair?

The colorful bottles standing at attention on the shelves in the hair care aisle bristle with promise, don't they?  In that they all promise you something if you'll but give them a chance.  Some promise cleaner hair.  Others shinier hair.  Others still say they'll make your crowing glory more manageable in one way or another.

Still, given many of these bottles contain mostly water how likely is it they can seriously enhance the look of your flowing locks?  Not to mention the effect the mysterious sounding ingredients listed on the label can have on your hair - good or bad.

Those selling these products, and that would include your neighborhood stylist, insist that today's hair care products are better than they ever have been. They work more reliably, do so with fewer harsh chemicals plus most do what they say they will.

Salon chatter aside, you can still get caught up in the upsell hype and pay too much for a salon product when there's a perfectly good equivalent waiting for you at the drug store.  How do you avoid that costly mistake?  And how can you really know for sure what you're putting on your hair?

Well, instead of downing ice cream by the quart worrying about it, let's see if we can't shed some light on the subject.

Basically you can pigeon hole most hair care products into three broad categories.  There are cleansers.  There are conditioners.  And there are the so called after care or finishing products.

The number of products in each category has exploded over the years.  In part because we've gone from washing our hair maybe once a week back in your parents' day to where most guys lather up daily.  And the typical gal will shampoo her hair roughly every other day.

Combine this more frequent washing will all the coloring, perming and straightening going on and you can see why there has been a proliferation of products to counteract all the damage being inflicted on our hair.  Not to mention the effect flat irons, curling irons and hair dryers are having on your mane.

Yet when you get right down to it, all conditioners and shampoos pretty much follow the same witches brew.  Were you to check out the recipes, errrrr I mean formulations, you'd basically see all have got your cleaners, your lathering agents, fragrances and preservatives all mixed together in varying amounts.

Yet do you really need to be adding things like cyclopentasiloxane, glycerol stearate, cocamidopropyl, ethylparaben to your tresses?

Well the first one allegedly smoothes your hair.

The second is an emulsifier that keeps all the ingredients mixed together.

The third is a detergent.

And the fourth chemical is a preservative that deters the growth of bacteria.

Now don't you wish you had paid more attention during high school chemistry class?  Suffice it to say some ingredients are critical to great looking hair and others not so much.  But they do help with the marketing of the product.

Yet all this may not matter.  You simply want results.  You want the product to do what it promises.  And to be honest I really can't help you there with specifics or recommendations.  At least not in a brief overview of what hair care products do or do not contain.  Besides it would be kinda silly not knowing your tresses the way you know then.

Okay so these products may not improve your love life as the ads suggest but you still want to know that others are watching.  Casting admiring glances.  Some envious ones too.  All the while wondering what they can do to have hair that looks as great as yours.  And if you can pull that off, it may not really matter what you're putting on your hair.  Am I right? Of course I am.

Proven Hair Color Ideas for Sexy, Flirty, Luscious Curls

Oh no.  Not again!  Your curly locks are displaying a mind of their own, are they? Willfully disobeying your most fervent wish that they'd settle down and just look pretty.  When was the last time that rebellious streak struck?  Oh yeah right.  Yesterday.

Okay so you can't tame your wild and crazy curls.  Same old song sung many times before I'm afraid.  And this despite all the chemical straightening and blow drying 'til your arms fall off and what naught?  Frustrating, isn't it?

Unfortunately this is the sad reality for some mop tops.  No matter what they do they are stuck with free spirited to downright unruly curls with a mind of their own.  And come what may they choose to live life without the inconvenience of a safety net.  A tendency which really comes to life when the humidity spikes.

Of course maybe you are putting your emphasis on the wrong place.  Perhaps you'd be better off to embrace the curls for who they are.  And focus instead on something you have more control over.  What's that, you ask?  Why the color of your tresses naturally.

It really is true that you can put an end to this unending dispute with your hair if you'll but surrender and focus on something you can control.  Again I'm suggesting it be the color. Which puts looking stunning once again within your grasp.

Assuming this sounds appealing for anyone weary of fighting the curl wars, here's a home coloring tip or two to keep in mind should you decide to go that route.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road:  First and much like Dorothy, you don't want to start from just anywhere and end up anywhere.  That, in the end, will get you nowhere.  Successful home hair coloring requires following a bit of a road map, or a plan, with a starting point nearest the scalp and a destination down at the ends.  Keeping in mind the oldest hair, the ends, has suffered the most environmental damage.  That likely makes them more porous and receptive to hair dye molecules.  Which is why you want to end up there rather than start there. Otherwise you could end up with darker ends when compared to the roots.

A Section At a Time:  Oh and without a map you risk missing swaths of hair.  For that problem sectioning is the answer.  This way you can thoroughly work the product into each section insuring equal opportunity coloring, if you will.  Or avoiding ending up with the dreaded hit and miss dye job.

Be Peroxide Free: It's most advisable that home hair colorers  with curly hair avoid anything with peroxide.  Not only are such products harder on your hair, they are riskier too.  Meaning you could mess up and end up with more problems than just unruly curls.  Knowing as we do that curly hair tends to be dryer hair anyway.

What Color, Please?  Finally, if you want gorgeous curls oozing with confidence you might pick up a box that is a shade darker than the color you seek.  Just another idea some have found helpful.  And that's just a shade of difference, rather than a lot shades.

Okay so I can't guarantee that wedding color with a more relaxed attitude towards your curls will get you on the cover of People magazine. But it might make them easier to live with regardless.

Short Cuts Savvy: Exploring Hair Adventures On the Shorter Side

Styles come and styles go.

Today it's a chic bob.

Tomorrow it's loads of luxurious hair.

Next week it might be a puckish pixie

All it takes just one celeb to show up at the right place at the right time with a new look to set off a stampede for the very same look. Because when today's "it girl" shows off a new 'do, the "bored with my hair" masses eagerly follow.

Okay but when the cut de jour goes long on shortness, what should the soon shorn-to-be know?

What should they consider before unleashing their stylist's scissors on their locks?

What should you be aware of when looking to grab the sexy sizzle of the lopped off look

The Upside Of Shortness

Well first any newly minted short hair addicts should know that cuts of this length are easy care.  You can bank on that.  They tend to be neat, presentable and professional looking at all times which is great for today's on the go working woman.  Yet they leave you perfectly coiffed for the casual after work gatherings too.

Those setting appointments for an ultra-cropped look should realize too that quality counts.  A bad short hair cut is just as undesirable as a bad longer cut.

If you're a workout devotee, what's not to love?  What amounts to wash and wear is great for workout sessions.  No hair in the eyes or other bothersome problems fitness freaks with longer locks have to cope with.

And if your makeup routine plays up your eyes and lips normally, shorter 'dos go perfect with that.

And don't forget short hair lets you showcase any and all cute earrings you've got in your jewelry box.

Stylist tip: If you're having trouble teasing sufficient body out of your sheered tresses, it might help to remember to use the appropriate shampoo and cut back on conditioner unless you have color treated hair.

Exploring the Downside

Still all is not peaches and cream in the land of smart looking yet stylishly shorn locks.  Yes, they are short on everyday upkeep which means bathroom time will be kept to a minimum.  Freeing you to hit the snooze button without guilt a time or two sans any worries about arriving stylishly late which your boss may not appreciate.

But you will have to pencil in time for more frequent trims.

Which also means you will need to budget $20, $30 or more every four to six weeks to keep the look fresh and not raggedy.

And if you're hair isn't in peak condition, that could be another problem.

Then too this isn't a cut that can be enthusiastically embraced by one and all.  If you don't have the facial features for it you'd be better off sticking with something better suited for camouflaging any short comings you've got in the face shape department.

Still if the bug to go short has bit and bit hard go with it with eyes wide open and you may just love the new you seen looking back in the mirror.

Mousse to Die For

Okay I admit it.  I love my mousse. Don't know what I'd do without it in fact as it does amazing things for my hair that no other styling product can.  Having learned a long time ago that smoke and mirrors (read styling products) can help give your hair what nature forgot to.

Yet whenever contemplating styling products you want to seriously consider the finished effect you are shooting for.  That way you'll pick the right product to do the job.  With mousse that should be sticky-less hold and volume out the ying yang.  If the product of choice adds to the shine quotient and gives you added manageability, so much the better.

Unlike the nasty stuff that was used in the 80's,  today's mousses (is "mousses" right?) tend to add volume and shape effortlessly while leaving your tresses touchably soft and natural looking.

Mousse Defined: Mousse is usually a light weight foamy product.  Stylists use it to add volume to your locks.  It can help with curls too.  Given it is so light weight it shouldn't weigh your hair down as other products, think gels, might.

Still it's important not to overdo it.  Much like the iconic Brylcreem ad of my father's generation, a little dab (of mousse) will do you - most of the time.

Plus the fact remains that with such products you want to apply them correctly.  In the case of foamy mousse that usually means as close to your scalp as you can and not much lower down the strand.  That's where it will be most effective when it comes to adding oomph to the volume seen in public.

That overview aside, there are a bunch of finer points that can separate winners from losers in the mousse product section of the hair care aisle.  Some things to consider might include….
  • Does it work in easily into your hair?
  • How do things look after a few hours?  Or a few more?  Are things holding up or is your crowning glory left limp and greasy looking?
  • Do you get the desired effect without stickiness or heaviness?  You want a mousse that works it's magic sans greasiness, stickiness or any unwanted chemical coating left behind.
  • How the product smells is important.  No one wants to walk around with skunk head that rivals a bug repellent.
  • Got dry hair?  You might want to run your peepers down the label looking for where alcohol is in the list of ingredients.  Knowing as we do it's far from anything resembling a moisturizing agent.  And as such won't do one's parched locks any favors.
Still, catwalk hair that's to die for.  Not born with it?  No prob!  Products like mousse are designed to help you fake it until you make it.  Some offer the allure of big time volume yet also throw in protection from self-inflicted hot styling tool damage. (By the way, if you want to get some more great hair care tips like these, www.TerrificTresses.com is a resource you might want to check out too.  I know I've found it to be helpful.)

But while you’re here, this two minute video gives you ways to use mousse to style your hair.

Curly Stying With Mousse

From watching this you should have noticed these highlights.

The idea is to run the mousse through your damp hair. Actually it’s best to get it mostly dry before applying a volumizing product like this.

Application of hair mousse can be done either by putting it on both hands and then using your fingers to rake the product through your hair. Or by putting it directly on your hair brush and running that through your mane.

Then tousle your locks to insure you get mousse on all your strands.

Finally if you want a curly effect, just wrap strands of hair around your index finger and give it a blast with your hair dryer. Do this all around your head and you’ll end up with cute, beachy waves. Which will last all day if you then lock in the look with some holding hairspray.

And if you want to know more about using mousse to give your hair some extra oomph, this helpful article from NaturallyCurly.com sheds more light on when you would want to use gel and when you would want to reach for the mousse. (I'm just full of helpfulness today, aren't I?)

Obviously no one can predict how your hair will react here.  But hair mousse is worth a try if volume eludes you.  As in measured doses the transformation can be breathtaking. The idea is to add body to fine hair and some lift to limp locks.  Usually without having to slather on five-gallon buckets of the stuff.

So regardless of whether you have an ongoing love affair with a hair care product like I do with mousse, rest assured that the best tressed, like Catherine Zeta Jones and J-Lo rely on beauty secrets like these to produce hair that is red carpet ready at the drop of a hat.

You Don't Have to Suffer From Do-It-Yourself Hair

Don't you just hate those friends of yours who seem to look effortlessly hot and sexy?

There's nothing do-it-yourself looking about them.

Hair perfect.

Makeup flawless.

Teeth blindingly white.

What's up with that?  Surely there must be more to looking coolly chic and looking like there's nothing to it?

There is actually.  And if you'd like to achieve the "hey, check me out" look effortlessly too, maybe some hair care secrets for doing so might be helpful so keep reading.  Some very useful tips that can help you declare your independence from do-it-yourself hair are coming right up.

Tips For Hair That Is Sophisticated, Smart And Downright Gorgeous

First things first.  Believe it or not, oh-so-stylish hair begins when you're sitting in the stylist's chair. No it's not what you think. There really are tips you can pick up that you can do yourself.  So you want to pay attention to what's being done when and with what.

Yeah I hear you.  While it can be oh so relaxing to have someone else in charge of styling your hair you won't learn much if you zone out and don't watch they are doing.  You can actually learn quite a lot if you like watch which brush is used, knowing that a round brush produces a different outcome than a flat one.  Or when hair spray is used as opposed to styling gel.  Tidbits like this becomes all the more important when you are feverishly, or is that desperately?, working to replicate that salon look at home.

Next you'll want to see if salon quality shampoos work better with your hair than drug store brands.  Some may.  Some may not.  Regardless, the trick here is not to be in a hurry when sudsing away.  You got it.  You want to lather up for a couple two three minutes just like your stylist does for you.  (Or at the very least 30 seconds.  Surely you aren't in THAT big of a hurry!) Taking care to massage the cleanser through your hair thoroughly.  Especially the hair nearest your scalp while taking pains to attend to every strand.

Second, be sure to rinse your hair completely.  100%.  Or no suds left behind.  Because there is nothing worse than left over shampoo residue weighing your hair down.  Robbing it of volume and oomph.

Third, water temp is key.  Sure you may love to luxuriate in a hot steamy shower.  But guess what?  Your hair doesn't care for it so much.  Let's assume that asking YOU to give up the hot shower routine is asking too much. Got it.  Then you want to wash your hair in the sink using lukewarm water.

Here's why.

Hot water raises the cuticles and expands the hair shaft.  This in turn aids in the escape of hair dye.  Plus it doesn't do much for the shine factor either.  You avoid all that unpleasantness by washing your locks in water that would be at best described as baby bottle warm.

Another point about water temp.  Go cooler still when conditioning only. And keep a wide toothed comb handy for when conditioning too.  The idea is to comb the conditioner through your tresses after you've toweled most of the water out.  And much like the shampoo routine, you don't want to rush the product.  Give it a good two or three minutes to do its job before you completely get it out of your hair.

A fifth pointer to tattoo to your forehead is that shampooing too often can dry your mane.  Yet it seems like shampooing every day is in our DNA, doesn't it? It's a right we have and we do all we can to exercise it.  Problem is your hair pays the price when all that sudsing up leads to dry, damaged hair.

Granted how often is not quite as simple as some simple rule you learn then apply.  The bigger idea is less often is better.  And whatever the frequency is that works best for you you'll likely find it holds more often than not that less is more.

Salon Pointer:  Don't get lazy when it comes to maintaining your style.  Fact is there is nothing worse than trying to control hair that has grown out somewhat, lost its shape, and is borderline wild and crazy.  Let's be honest.  It's doubtful you're up to the challenge.  Besides challenging hair is the last thing we need.  To avoid all this grief make regular appointments as the challenge of styling a cut that has outgrown its style is more than most of us can manage.  This holds regardless if you tend to wear your hair up, down, straight or curly

How to Use Your Blow Dryer To Get A Little Oomph

Okay now no overview of how to get the look you want would be complete without talking about your blow dryer.  Sadly many of us experience an epic fail here and so our locks are doomed from the start.  That might be because again we're in too big of a hurry to click on the blow dryer taking aim at our wet locks before they have been properly prepped?  (I hope you're getting this that being in too much of a hurry is seldom good for our mane.)

Prepped?  What does that mean?  Glad you asked.

You never want to blow dry hair that hasn't been towel dried from top to bottom.  Clicking on and pointing the blow dryer at hair that is still drippy wet isn't smart.  Once you've accomplished that towel dry stuff, you want to focus the dryer on the roots FIRST.  Yet jumping into styling too soon is another "hurry up" mistake too many make.  Instead take aim at the roots and lift your hair with a round brush at the same time to blow in the volume.

You see, here's the problem with directing the hot air on the lower part of your strands first and then getting around to the roots later.  You'll have a hard time avoiding flatness near the scalp.  And flat roots don't do much for any style no matter how great it looks on the celeb in the photo you saw.

For even more body, shoot to dry your locks in the opposite direction you will wear them. For example if you normally wear your bangs from left to right, initially dry them going the other direction. Then flip them when the moisture is about blown away.

Also avoid the maximum power setting.  You want to use only enough heated air to do the job.  And if you towel off your hair first, the required setting will be well below the blast to the max setting.

Granted, to get the most from your blow drying takes practice.  No doubt about it.  But the results of that practice (practice makes perfect?) can be most gratifying.

And while it seems to many the magic only happens in the salon, you can make the magic happen at home if you'll but follow tips like these.

Anyway, the next time you find yourself staring at the mirror, your fingers sticky with foamy mousse, arms weary from blow drying remember what you read here.  Hair freedom is possible.  You don't have to be stuck with a terminal case of do-it-yourself hair.  In many cases all you need do is take your time and take care with your hair to get the hot look you want.

Getting To The Root Of Problem Hair

Is your hair a bit of a problem child?

Are issues with your hair sinking any hopes of having sexy and gorgeous tresses faster than the Titanic?

Has the hair of your dreams turned into your worst nightmare?

The good news is you don't have to spend the equivalent of a small country's GDP to overcome most tress distresses.  Let's quickly look at five bedeviling problems and explain how you can get your head together again.

Dandruff

Is there any greater turnoff than dandruff?   Not to mention how embarrassing it can be?  Problem is it's a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.  A fact many don't realize.  Because these flakes are caused by a fungus.  For those keeping track Malassezia globosa to be specific.  Which is actually more of a yeast the lives off the oils on your scalp.  Great life isn't it? If you choose not to go with one of the popular dandruff shampoos on the market you could always try to cure this using a cider vinegar rinse.  Seems that changes the pH of your scalp making it inhospitable for the little buggers.  In essence telling them to flake off!

Lost Hair

Right up there with any flaking on any undesirable list of hair problems is hair loss itself.  Which is more common than you might think.  Surprisingly maybe as many as one out of every 10 women suffer from this problem to some degree or another.  Losing hair kinda puts the whole hair care problem thing into perspective, doesn't it?  I mean those losing their hair, would be thrilled to have flat, limp or greasy hair as long as it was real hair.  While you may be a walking the same path as those other unfortunates wondering why, it's likely a heredity thing.  Although bad diet, certain meds, even childbirth can be contributors to this problem.  At least in the short run.  In the long run it's nothing short of heartbreaking.

Fried Hair

With our ongoing love affair with over processing and hot styling tools a damaged mane should come as no surprise either.  So much so many of us suffer from dry hair, that tends to break off or be loaded with split ends.  Here prevention is way better than cure.  Like with splits.  There is no patch kit you can buy that will repair them.  You're much better off preventing them by using conditioner to help you detangle.  Or getting a regular trim to eliminate them from the landscape all together.  Of course conditioning can help hide them for the time being.  But that will not heal them.  Yet if it works for tonight, who cares?  Longer term some hair dressers might suggest applying a glaze to strengthen the cuticle some.  I'm just not convinced if that's good advice or not.

Flat Hair

Limp. Lifeless.  Lacking volume.  As energized as a dead battery.  What gives?  A couple of things actually.  You might have product buildup weighing your locks down.  Which calls for a clarifying shampoo.   Or you may be going heavy on conditioners which likewise might be weighing your hair down.  If that's the case, just stop it!

Combination Hair

This is the final hair scourge we'll look at here.  This is where you've got a greasy scalp and then extreme dryness towards the ends.  How to treat this can be a stumper.  But many find good success by remembering to only shampoo the hair nearest the scalp and then conditioning the hair ear high on down. Only do this in reverse order.  Condition below.  Wait a few. Then massage in the shampoo the scalp.  Finally rinse it all down the drain.  Also try laying off the styling products in the scalp area too.   All this works to minimize the oil slick that has taken up residence on top.  While quenching the parched strands further on down.  By the way, what you do here is way more important than the products you use to do it.  Which could be a hair care secret your stylist forgot to mention.

We've all got problem hair to some extent.  No one has perfect hair even though it may look like they do.  What separates us then is knowing what to do when the problems strike.  Hopefully this sheds some light on these five issues at least.

Keeping the Salon Look - What If Everybody's Wrong?

Do you know anyone who doesn't crave a stunning hairstyle?  One that's perfectly suited for them and looks, well, amazing?  This endless desire has spawned a slew of rules and styling dos and don'ts.  All designed to help you know what to  do to get that perfect 'do. Naturally everyone knows them.  But what if everyone's wrong?  Yeah, what if you're paying the equivalent of full price for half price advice?

One area rife with half truths is how to keep the just stepped out of the salon look at home.  It's something we all want, that's for sure.  Because we feel all hot and sexy what with all new look and all.  But all too soon that look has vanished because perhaps we're following the wrong set of dos and don'ts.

For example everybody knows salon hair care products are better and may well be a better way to accomplish that salon look preservation.  Sure, let's say that true.  But from there is where the helpfulness usually goes astray. I mean, look, just because you get your cleanser from the salon doesn't guarantee a great outcome.  It really comes down to how you use or misuse it.

You see most do not shampoo their hair like stylists tend to when your hair is flayed over a sink behind you. With these concentrated products it's truly a case of less is more.  And then more is more.  Meaning concentrated, yes. But fast action, no.  You need to really massage it in and give it a couple of minutes of that massaging stuff to get the most out of it.  Otherwise you're already on the path to the same old hair you had before your salon visit.

Everybody also knows that shampooing itself is vital.  But another little known hindrance to maintaining your salon look is shampooing too much.  Sure no one wants to be walking around with greasy and disgusting hair.  But do you really have to wash as often as some of your friends will insist?  Likely not.  If you're got stick straight locks every other day may be more than frequent enough.  While mop tops may be able to go two or three days between shampoo sessions.  The risk is dryness.  And we both know dry hair doesn't have that just stepped from the salon look.

Everybody knows about volumizing products that can add oodles of volume to your hair.  And volume is something that can transform limp, lifeless hair overnight.  What fewer seem to realize is that the path to lasting volume is paved with layers. As in layers cut into your hair that leaves you with locks that effortlessly hold the volume all day long.

Then too everybody knows having a good hair brush is vitally important. Unless you have curly locks and then not so much.  But if we all know that why do we fall short and get some cheap, flimsy brush rather than investing in one that's up to the job.

Okay so  everybody thinks they know the dos and don'ts.  But as these few examples show, it turns out too many don't know and thus unwittingly sabotage their most earnest desire, to duplicate the salon look at home.  Does that go for you too?

Why Treat Your Hair to a Healthy Diet

Did someone call 911 because they thought you had murdered your hair?

Sorry to hear that.  Too often rather than having the thick, luscious, manageable mane you were hoping for, you end up with an oily. flat, or an otherwise disappointing hair disaster.  That's made all the worse (if that's even possible) when heat and humidity settle in for the summer.

But maybe instead of sudden homicide your hair suffered a death from a thousand cuts.  Coming in the form of too much junk food and not enough good for you food?  Could be, you know.

So rather than 911 maybe you need some 411 time.  Because just because your locks have fallen flat, literally, you don't have to take that lying down.  There are things you can do to fight back and bring your hair back to life.

Okay so can we agree that while a well balanced diet is good for you it's especially good for your hair?  So if you want to bring it back to life kick the fast food to the curb and learn to eat healthy.

For starters, you want to spend way more time in the produce section of the grocery store making friends with fresh fruits and vegetables.  Yeah, I know, just like mom used to say.

And don't forget the vegetable proteins.  That would include legumes or peas, beans, peanuts and the like.  These guys rate high on the good for you meter.  Plus they are low fat yet loaded with B vitamins, antioxidants, zine and iron, in addition to the proteins - all of which is great for your hair.

So getting reacquainted with what's to be found in the produce section is a good first step.  And a good second step.  Third would be whole grain food along with fish.  While cutting back on the animal fats which are often are found in abundance in fast food. That and sugar and sodium which as you know are kind of low on the good for you scale.

Oh and don't forget to stay hydrated.  Knocking back lots of water is smart here too.  Let's make that step four, shall we?

Stick with this plan for a measly four to six weeks and I can just about guarantee your hair will look shiner and all around healthier.  And if you're not careful you'll look way better too.  Not to mention feel better, sexier, with more energetic.  Shiny locks and high energy girl?  What's not to like?

Even better is when your friends, or those less than friends, are primed and ready to make fun of your hair and you rob them of the opportunity, well just imagine how good that will feel.

How to Control That Head Of Crazy Wild Girl Curls

Do your curls suffer from attention deficit disorder?  Meaning they don't pay any attention to what you want.  Ever!  They just go wild and crazy at will doing what they want always! And I won't even get you started on what happens on days when the humidity spikes.  Annoying isn't it?  Poffiness gets old real fast.

Okay so all attempts at control have failed.  I get that.  Chemical straightening and flat irons are no match for your curly locks.  Sooner or later your curls have to grow out and at best you're fighting them to a draw with your trusty Chi flat iron or its equivalent.   Understood.

But before you wave the white flag here are some tips for successfully living with curls.  But follow these ideas only if you dare.

For starters know that curl control starts with having a stylist who KNOWS how to cut curls.  Not every one does you know.

Then it's best not to shampoo daily. You're better off with like washing your hair every other day or going even longer between suds ups.  Because shampoo strips your curls of their natural oils.  Not good since curly hair tends to be dry hair by nature anyway.

Pitch the terry cloth and stock up on microfiber towels instead. Remembering to squeeze the water out of your locks rather than rubbing them.

Same goes for the blow dryer.  Air drying is best whenever possible.

Avoid playing with your hair in any way, shape, or form.  In fact avoid even touching it with your fingers.

Also avoid using a brush on your locks EVER!

Now we're talking.  Treat them right and you can have a head of luscious curls oozing with confidence! Curls that do not even offer a hint of having been excessively processed within an inch of their life.  In other words you can have the most amazing head of curls by following simple tips like these.  But only if you dare.

11 Proven Home Coloring Tips That Work

Let me guess.  Didn't have enough cash on hand to have a pro do it so you broke down and bought a box of hair color at Walmart thinking you'd give the whole color-your-hair-yourself-at-home thing a whirl.  I'm not surprised.  There's a lot of that going on nowadays.

So how'd that work out for you?

Again just guessing here, but one of two things likely happened. Color nirvana or you've already made a call to the colorist at your salon to get the color corrected.  Figuring you'll put the cost on your credit card and worry about that bill later.  Because things turned out so disastrously bad you couldn't dare show your face in public.  Not while looking like that at least.

Not surprising.  Happens all the time to first time home colorists.  Which would suggest you need some proven hair coloring ideas you can use to make your next home hair coloring adventure a big success.  Because while this isn't exactly rocket science, it's not as easy as one might think no matter what your BFFs might tell you.  At least not if you want to end up with healthy, shiny hair afterwards.

Tip#1:  You never know so don't go and forget to do the patch test to see if you're going to have any kind of reaction.

Tip#2: If your hair is long or super thick buy two boxes just in case.  Nothing worse than finding out mid process you don't have enough dye to do the job.

Tip#3: Take care to apply the color to all of your hair.  Sounds obvious I know.  But it can happen.  A good way to do that is to split your hair into sections.  Then do one at a time making sure you saturate the strands.  Otherwise you may end up with chunks of hair where the color did not take.

Tip#4: Start from the top and work your way down to again make sure not a single strand is missed.

Tip#5: Make sure to massage the color in all over your head like you're shampooing your hair.

Tip#6: Don't forget the hairline. Some forget to do that you know.

Tip#7: Some find piling their hair on top of their head helps them to see if they missed anything underneath.

Tip#8: This can be messy so plan on doing it in the bathtub.  Makes cleanup is easier.  And you will need to clean up since as you massage the dye in it will likely splatter some.

Tip#9: Don't dare use your fav micro fiber towel.  Instead use an old ratty one you can pitch and never see again.

Tip#10:  Remember to follow the directions on the box and you should be fine. It's really not hard at all if you do what the box says for as long as it says.

Tip#11: Try real hard to avoid getting any dye on your face or ears.  Yes, it will wash off, eventually, but you don't want any splotches of dyed skin on display.  Ruins the effect, you know?  You might also run a little Vaseline around your hair line and on your ears to make sure this doesn't happen.

BONUS Tip: Remember to ALWAYS use the follow up conditioner found in the kit.

Coloring your hair at home doesn't have to be a nightmare.  It also doesn't have to mean you will do horrible things to your hair.  Not at all.  At least not if you follow proven tips like the ones shared here.

Where Has the Shine Gone?

Is your hair so bad off you're considering holding a telethon to raise money to get it help?

So what's the problem?  Oh I get it.   Jerry Lewis wouldn't take your call, huh?  Well, some days are like that.  The shine goes.  The frizz shows up.  Dull and drab sets in.  Leaving you to wonder where has the shine gone?

Sure there are products you can slather on that might produce shine.  But the idea, I believe, is glossy not greasy. At least for most of us it is.  Yes both words do begin with the letter "g", you're right there.  But you don't want to confuse the two, otherwise others might point and giggle.  Still distinguishing between greasy and glossy is possible and achievable. But only if you follow a few rules some may be sadly unaware of.

Shiny Hair Rule #1: Alcohol laced products won't help bring back the shine.  Things like hair mousse contain enough alcohol that those getting a whiff might request they be banned from AA meetings.  So read the labels, home girl.  Definitely look for things that are free of that not so innocent shine robber - alcohol.

Shiny Hair Rule #2:  Suds up fewer times per week to encourage the shine and if need be with a moisturizing shampoo.  (And then applied only to the roots.  On the other hand limit the conditioner application to the portion of your strands that fall south of the ears.)  Rinse the whole shebang thoroughly.  This approach will add volume to the roots and help the rest of your hair find its long lost shine.

Shiny Hair Rule #3: Think shiny silicone.  If you're looking for thermal protection you want products containing silicones.  Really.  They both create a heat shield and seal the cuticle.  Which is good since we both know a roughed up cuticle is a surefire route to dull, drab locks.  Just don't go crazy.  Too much of a good thing, read silicone, can leave you with the problem we mentioned earlier.  Greasy, flat, limp tresses.

Shiny Hair Rule #4: Just to clarify, well, clarify.  That's right.  Eliminate any nasty product buildup with a clarifying shampoo as often as needed to let a ton of shine, ahh, shine through.

Shiny Hair Rule #5: Block a shine huge killer.  If you're going to be out in the sun, enjoy.  Just make sure your hair enjoys the experience too by protecting it with products that contain UV filters.  Nasty stuff those UV rays.  They effectively oxidize (read dull) the surface of your strands.  If over time they can diminish the finish on your once shiny car think what they can do to the outside of the shafts of your hair. No thanks.

Glossy not greasy is indeed doable.  Following tips like these can begin to have you basking in maximum shine in no time - even if your hair has temporarily lost it.  But much like Rome wasn't built in a day, your hair won't get it's shine back in a day either. But eventually, rain or shine, you'll restore your tarnished mane to it former shimmering self.  And won't that feel great!
